For this project you will be investigating a story at Gage Middle School or in the immediate community. You may choose to cover any story you like, but before you begin videotaping you will need to write a proposal and discuss the ethics of producing your story.

Video Journalism
Digital video, photographs and graphics, audio Choose a story to investigate at Gage Middle School and produce an video investigative report. This project is completely digital. Use iMovie HD to download and edit your video footage, SoundStudio and Garage Band for any sound enhancements and composition of an original score.

Beginning Reporting:

Check out Jim Hall's Virginia Commonwealth University's site on beginning reporting. Direct and clearly written information that you can use right away.

Ethics:

You need to know your responsibilities as a journalist. The Society of Professional Journalists has published a code of ethics on their web site. Below is a summary:

  1. Seek Truth and Report It
    Journalists should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.
  2. Minimize Harm
    Ethical journalists treat sources, subjects and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect.
  3. Act Independently
    Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public's right to know.
  4. Be Accountable
    Journalists are accountable to their readers, listeners, viewers and each other.

Procedure:

  1. Choose a story to investigate about something that has happened, is happening or will happen at Gage Middle School. Avoid scandals, gossip and rumors.
  2. Download the "Investigation Proposal" form below, and write a proposal to produce an investigative report and includes answers to the questions.
